I am sooooooo excited for today’s Film Talk! Let’s dive right in and talk about IT! IT is based off the Stephen King book and was directed by Andy Muschietti and stars Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise. For those of you who have never heard of It, Stephen King, read the book the build up to this movie or seen the original mini series…. Shame on you and do you live under a rock?! Luckily for me, I knew of It and of Stephen King’s work right from young (thanks Mum).
But if you do live under a rock, IT is about a group of children in Derry who are being hunted by a creature that kills children. It likes to show itself as a clown but ultimately It uses anything in its power to scare and kill kids. Essentially IT is a movie about fear.
As you already know I am a huge horror fan. Sit on the edge of your seat, jump scare horror fan. I am also a huge Stephen King fan and I know he is very picky about the movie adaptations of his books so when IT got his seal of approval I knew this was going to be good. What I didn’t realise was how GOOD the movie really was!
This movie is just an all round fabulous piece of cinema. This isn’t just a traditional horror film where we a few good jump scares, a semi-decent story line to follow and fine acting. Oh no. This was an all rounder of a movie. Fantastic cinematography, set design, acting, directing, the special effects were amazing and pennywise’s costume and make up was fantastic!
Not a traditional horror movie
I find horror movie scare me while I watch them and then I forget about them afterwards. IT however, kind of does the opposite. Of course there’s always the tense atmosphere and general feeling of unease that come with horror movies and there are a few jump scares in IT and – for me – few moments of ‘creepiness’. But I found it wasn’t until afterwards that I really began to think about how genuinely creepy the movie is. I think this is because the whole idea of the movie is of fear. IT is a creature that turns into your deepest, darkest fear and that for me is horrifying!
Oh, did I mention I don’t like clowns…
Good piece of cinema
As I said above, this movie is just a good all rounder. Not just a horror movie. The acting was fantastic from everyone. The children were great and I wonder are they now traumatized by their experience one set?! Bill as Pennywise is just brilliant! There’s so much you can do with a character like Pennywise and Bill really took him to next level creepy and evil. The special effects in this were also very good! Since this is a shape shifting, fear inducing creature, they needed good special effects and they sure delivered. Horror movies are often considered B-Grade and have low production values. IT sure had high production value and again just a great piece of cinema.
Although I wasn’t as scared as I would have liked to have been (yes I am crazy) during the movie overall I loved IT! I know for some this movie is terrifying before, during and after and all I can say is still go and see it! It’s so worth it unless you have a massive phobia of clowns then I really don’t recommend it!
