Nutella Chocolate Cake is a dense and fluffy chocolate mud cake with a creamy Nutella Buttercream filling and topping and finished with Nutella drizzled over top.

You guys, this cake is AMAZING!
And I don't even like cake that much. I ate a number of slices, which is saying something for me. This cake is special becasue 1) it has Nutella 2) its four layers! Yes four! and 3) its a celebration cake. Why?....

Because I finally hit 1000 followers on Facebook!! Whoop whoop! You have no idea how much this means and I want to thank everyone who supports me and this blog, who make my recipes, shares them and just follows along for the ride. It means the world to me truly.
Now to hit 10000!!
Right, enough of that, on to the cake!
The cake itself is a fudge chocolate cake. First made here in my Chocolate Fudge Cake post. The cake always turns out rich, fluffy but also very moist. Almost like a devils food cake. The only difference is I upped the ratios of the ingredients so we got a bigger cake. Four layers instead of two.
Nutella Buttercream
The Nutella buttercream steals the show. The buttercream has 1 cup of Nutella and quite a bit of butter so this is by no means health food (we're celebrating though so its okay!). The buttercream tastes just like Nutella and is smooth, creamy and not overly sweet.
Top the cake with extra Nutella and you have an epic Nutella chocolate cake.

Now you can decorate the cake however you desire. I chose a naked cake look for the sides so I could focus on really piling up the buttercream on the top. You could do this, cover the cake completely for a more refined look, have a completely naked cake or try a Nutella drip cake! The choice is entirely yours but I would love to see your designs!
I hope you enjoy the Nutella Chocolate Cake and I truly hope you give this recipe a go and remember to rate and report back your results in the comments below. I love reading your comments! Also #lightscamerabake on Instagram for a chance to be featured!
Nutella Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
Chocolate Cake;
- ¾ Cup Vegetable Oil or Rice Bran Oil (175g)
- 1 and ½ Cup Milk
- 3 Large Eggs
- 1 and ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 2 and ¼ Cups Sugar (450g)
- 2 and ¼ Cups All Purpose Flour (270g)
- 1 and ½ Cup Cocoa (142g)
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- 3 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 2 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1 and ½ Cups Water
Nutella Buttercream;
- ½ Cup Butter, Softened (110g)
- 1 Cup Nutella (296g)
- 3-4 Cups Icing Sugar (360g-480g)
- 2 Tbsp. - ¼ Cup Milk
Extras;
- ½ Cup Nutella (148g)
Instructions
Chocolate Cake;
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350º F).
- Line two 20cm (9-inch) round cake pans with baking paper and spray with cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl, combine the oil, milk, eggs and vanilla extract and mix together.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, baking soda, and baking powder.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix either by hand or on a low speed of a hand mixer. Don't over-mix.
- Add the water and combine. The batter will be thin.
- Pour the batter into both of the pans and bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick poked into the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing cakes from the pans.
- Allow to cool completely before filling and icing.
Nutella Buttercream;
- Beat the butter and the Nutella together.
- Slowly beat in the icing sugar and milk.
- Add more milk as needed until you have a thick and spreadable consistency.
- Slice both cakes in half so you now have four cakes.
- Its optional, but highly recommended, to spread two tablespoons of Nutella on each layer before spreading buttercream on the the layers and stacking until you have a four layer cake.
- Now you can spread the remaining Nutella Buttercream on top of the cake and the sides. I went for a more 'naked cake' look on the sides so I could decorate the top of the cake but the decorating is up to you!
- Sprinkle over any remaining Nutella on top and you're done!

I don’t understand the frosting directions. Step 2 says to beat in the icing sugar and milk, but beat them into what? In step 1 the frosting is already on the cake. Can you explain? I really want to make this
