It's not Easter without hollow eggs am I right my Kiwi kids? But what if we took a traditional hallow egg and filled it to the brim with mousse? Nutella mousse. This Nutella Mousse Filled Easter Egg is everything you could ever want at Easter. We have a creamy, melt-in-the-mouth Nutella mousse, cheesecake, Smarties and of course the all important Easter Egg!
Just when you thought Easter couldn't get any better huh? The whole concept is very simple really. Take the top off a hollow egg put Nutella mousse inside, top it off with whipped cream and you're done. It's so simple it's brilliant! (In my humble opinion anyway...)
This recipe is only six ingredients! (Seven if you include the Smarties). You need one hollow egg, Nutella, cream, cream cheese, vanilla essence and icing sugar. As you can see from the list of ingredients this is not a health food! But hey, it's Easter!
We're going to take this Nutella mousse filled Easter egg a step further... We're going to add layers. Layers of flavour. We're going to have our Nutella mousse which is a mixture of Nutella and whipped cream and we're going to have a sort-of-cheesecake layer which is cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence. After - VERY CAREFULLY - taking the top off the Easter egg we're going to layer the Nutella mousse and cream cheese mixtures in the egg. We of course finish with the cream cheese mixture for the colour contrast and presentation and top with Smarties or M&M's. (You can omit the Smarties, my hollow egg came with them so I added them!).
As you can see I used a regular sized hallow Easter egg so I ended up with a single serving recipe. Not that you can eat it all in a single serve! This Easter egg ended up being devoured by my Mum and myself over three days so I would say it really serves around 6-8. Depending how hungry you are ;). The Nutella mousse is surprisingly filling so it took a few sessions to get through the full Easter egg.
You could try eat it one go. After all, Easter is the time to coma out on chocolate but be warned you may feel a little sick afterwards. But hey, you do what you want. I won't judge!
Another option would be to buy smaller hallow eggs and fill each one with the Nutella mousse and serve them as little desserts for Easter. That would be really cute also!
If you aren't a regular reader or are new here (Hi!), you may not know that I recently 'moved' to Australia. I've made a YouTube video on this so if you're interested you can check it out here.
Nutella Mousse Filled Easter Egg
Ingredients
- 1 Regular hallow Easter Egg
- ½ Cup Nutella (150g)
- ¾ Cup Cream
- 1 Cup Cream Cheese (250g)
- ½ Cup Icing Sugar (65g)
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- ¼ Cup Smarties or M&Ms (70g)
Instructions
- Take the top off the hallow Easter egg. To do this I carefully pierced the egg and lightly cut around the top.
- Beat the cream until soft peaks and half the cream mixture.
- Add the Nutella to half of the cream and beat until combined. Set aside
- In a separate bowl beat the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla extract. Fold through the remaining whipped cream.
- Starting with the Nutella mousse, add in ⅓ of the mixture to the base of the egg.
- Top that with ⅓ of the cream cheese mixture.
- Repeat twice and let the cream cheese mixture spill out the top.
- Sprinkle with Smarties or M&M's if you wish.
- Allow it to set for at least an hour but overnight is best for a set mousse.
